2012 Exam period preparation

Lets get the ball rolling ......

Consider the following case:

Anna is a married 58 year old who migrated to Australia 10 years ago. She has 3 adult sons who all still live at home and spends most of her time cooking and looking after the four men in her family. Anna was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes five years ago after feeling lethargic and run down for quite some time. She is well controlled at this present moment. The dentist has referred her to you for a periodontal assessment. She is currently on Metformin, Norvasc and also takes Crestor. She is moderately overweight and finds it difficult to find the time needed to look after her health properly.
 Brainstorm the following questions:
1. What is Type II Diabetes?
2.  What are the causes or predisposing conditions of Type 2 diabetes?

3.  Identify is the mode of action of each of Anna's medications.

4. Why do you think she is on this combination of medications?

5. Are there any dental side effects of these medications?

Have a go at these OSCA style questions.

  1. Hey All
These are Mikaela's answers so far as she can't post at the moment:

    1. What is Type II diabetes:

Type 2 diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes produce insulin, but may not produce enough or cannot use it effectively as insulin resistance occurs at the cellular level.

    2. What are the causes or predisposing conditions of Type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
    · genetic predisposition
    · lifestyle factors such as high blood pressure, being overweight or obese (especially around the waist area), insufficient physical activity and poor diet.

    3. 3. Identify is the mode of action of each of Anna's medications.

Metformin helps to reduce blood glucose levels:
** Reduces the amount of stored glucose released by the liver
**Slows the absorption of glucose from the intestine
** This helps the body to become more sensitive to insulin improving the effects of the insulin produced by the body itself

This is a great start Mikaela but we need to expand a little more on each of the answers. e.g., what role does insulin play in glucose metabolism? How does it work? What type of drug is the metformin? Does it work on receptors carriers etc... lets keep going..
